The Harbor was without a doubt the busiest and most populated spot within the entirety of Pirate Cove at any one point. Ships of all builds and designs were anchored along its wide wharves, their pirate flags billowing in the salty breeze. The air was loud with colorful curses, laughter, screams, music and the occasional cannon shot. The water choppy, and usually discolored by some poor sod who had been cast overboard, now nothing more than fishfood for the more nastier of sea-creatures, some who lingered just beneath the sea's surface, hungry for the taste of human meat.
Delta wasn't one of those beasts. One of the more colourful of stories swapped around by sailors and pirates concerning mermaids was that they enjoyed eating the flesh of the men that they chose to drown. Delta would always snort at that. Did humans have any idea of just how bad they smelt to her sense of smell? It would be a cold day in Davy Jones' locker before she would so much as bite one of the Land-Walkers.
Except on a full moon. But that was a whole 'nother story.
Delta Nerites was a bit of an abnormality compared to her tailed sisters. They were quite content staying within the calmer, fresher waters of their lagoon, turning their noses up at swimming within Neverland's other waters. But Delta found the lagoon to be just as large and boring as a puddle. It was waters like the Cove's Harbor that called out to her unbridled soul. The sound of gunshots bringing excitement to her frozen heart.
Cutting through the harbor's "waves" with both ease and agility, Delta's scale-dotted fingers gripped one of the uneven wooden sides of the wharf, lifting her torso up so that her breasts and flat stomach were pressed against the solid surface, her silvery tail visible and levitating just above the lapping sea. Her long silvery locks spilling down her narrow shoulders and back, her large icy-blue eyes taking in her surroundings hungrily, her coral-coloured lips smiling wistfully.
Other mermaids would have been terrified about being captured by pirates or overzealous sailors but Delta did not feel such fear. It would take a rather brilliant pirate to capture a mermaid like her. And Delta didn't hold much faith in the abilities of Neverland's pirates. Or their intelligence.
